PRESS RELEASE: Urging communities to tackle the taboo
Newcastle funeral homes to get people talking
Co-op funeral homes across Newcastle are to host events to encourage the local community to talk about death, dying and bereavement.
The ‘Starting the Conversation’ events will give residents a chance to ask professionals from the funeralcare industry any questions they may have about funerals and later life planning.
Despite 98% of people from Newcastle having experienced a bereavement, less than two fifths are totally comfortable when talking about the subject with loved ones (35%)*.
For this reason, Co-op Funeralcare is inviting local residents to join the events, which are taking place on 21st and 22nd May, in an attempt to break the taboo around the topic.
Earlier this month Co-op launched the biggest ever survey into death, dying and bereavement as it seeks to lead the way in tackling the taboo around this subject and uncover what stops the nation from talking about these important topics. It will gather opinions from consumers, funeral directors, charities and Co-op members – asking them to give their views on death, bereavement and funeral wishes via coop.co.uk/survey**.
Richard Bland, Senior Funeral Director for Co-op Funeralcare, commented: “We know that talking about death is one of the hardest conversations people have to have in their life. Hopefully, by holding these events, we’ll be able to break down the stigma around the topic and get people discussing death, dying and bereavement.”
The events will take place over two days. The first event will take place from 10.30am-1.30pm on Monday 21st May at the Winlaton Centre, North St, Winlaton, Blaydon NE21 6BY. The second event will take place on Tuesday 22nd May at Benwell House, 345 Benwell Lane, Newcastle upon Tyne NE15 6RU. Please contact the funeral homes directly; for Blaydon Funeralcare call 0191 4142925 or for Newcastle Funeralcare call 0191 273 1311.
