PRESS RELEASE: From Pudsey to Bayeux

Local family travel over 500 miles for Remembrance Sunday

On Friday 25th October, a family of four from Pudsey will be setting off on the 500 mile round trip to Bayeux Cemetery in France to raise money for the Royal British Legion ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

Husband and wife Carl and Debra Brightmore, who both work for Co-op Funeralcare, will be driving all the way to Bayeux Cemetery in France with their two sons to pay their respects to Pudsey’s local residents who lost their lives in the war.

To ensure the family get there in the most fitting way, Co-op Funeralcare has provided the family with a car, which has been transformed with a showering of poppies.

The journey, which will see Co-op’s poppy car make its debut journey, will be raising money for the Royal British Legion and will start in Pudsey before the Brightmores drive down to Newhaven and get the ferry over to France.

The Pudsey & Farsley Royal British Legion Branch has provided the family with a list of local residents who lost their lives in WW2 and are buried in the Bayeux Cemetery. The family will be placing wreaths and poppy crosses, which have been donated by the Royal British Legion on the graves of those listed.

Debra Brightmore, Co-op Funeral Arranger in Pudsey, commented: “This is something that we have always wanted to do and with the support of the Co-op, we’re now able to pay our respects to Pudsey residents who lost their lives in the war.”

Damon Sugden, Pudsey & Farsley Royal British Legion Branch added: “So many families have never been able to visit their loved ones’ place of rest, so the efforts of Debra and Carl to visit the local servicemen who lost their lives is an act of kindness that many people in the community appreciate. It really is an example of true community spirit.”

To find out more about the journey or to sponsor the family for their upcoming journey, Carl has set up a Just Giving page.
