PRESS RELEASE: Co-op’s Wildcard Bowls champion revealed

Connor beat off opponents across the country

Co-op Funeralcare’s final leg of finding their Wildcard Bowls Champion took place this weekend, as the funeral provider crowned Connor Cinato of Ely as the winner on Sunday 2nd October.

Members of six communities across the UK were out in force in Blackpool, to show support for their regional champion taking part in Co-op Funeralcare’s Wildcard Bowls final. Connor Cinato beat Paul Maynard in a tie-break, with it going down to the last bowl of the day to decide the winner.

The competition, which was launched earlier this year to find a wildcard entry into the Scottish International Championships, offered Co-op members and colleagues across the UK the chance to pit their skills against one another in a series of regional play-offs. The six sets of play-offs were held in Stirling, Stanley, Blackpool, Ely, Bristol and London in September, and culminated with the final on Sunday 2nd October.

Connor Cinato, who lives in Ely, will now go on to play world-class bowlers at the Scottish International Championships in Perth, Scotland, courtesy of Co-op Funeralcare. He will play against well-known bowlers including last year’s champion, Greg Harlow, and Nicky Brett, currently ranked first in the world.

Mark Chappelhow, National Community Manager, commented: “The final was certainly an exciting event, and we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who turned up to support the six regional finalists. We’ve been sponsoring the bowling community for many years, but this competition is completely unique to anything we’ve done before. We wish Connor all the best for the Championships in a few weeks’ time.”

The competition will help to raise funds for Co-op’s partnership charity, the British Red Cross, in their bid to raise £3.5 million to tackle loneliness and social isolation in communities across the UK.
