PRESS RELEASE: Close knit community group celebrates first birthday

Dunmurry Funeralcare bringing the community together

A crochet club set up by Co-op Funeralcare in Dunmurry is celebrating its first birthday.
Co-op’s Crochet Club was established by Senior Funeral Director, Terry Weir, who works at the funeral home on Kingsway. The group, introduced last year, is one of many ways that Co-op Funeralcare supports the local communities in Dunmurry.
Throughout its first year, and continuing into its second year, the club has raised money for charity through the sale of crocheted creations. Ahead of Christmas, the club will once again be selling their crocheted Christmas tree decorations to support local charity Race Against Multiple Sclerosis; two blankets will also be prizes in a charity raffle.

Terry Weir, Senior Funeral Director, said: “Crochet has been a hobby of mine for quite some time; I have crocheted Remembrance Day Poppies for the past three years in aid of the Royal British Legion. With the growing popularity of the hobby, I thought it was a great opportunity to create a club where people, whether they’re a crochet beginner or expert, can socialise over something that they enjoy.”
Stephanie McLean, who has been a member of the Crochet Club since the start, said: “Crochet brings back fond memories for me; when I was a child my Granny tried to teach me crochet, but when she passed away I gave up.
I saw the advertisement in my local supermarket but when I saw the club would be taking place at a funeral home, I was little bit sceptical. Now I go every week, it’s such a homely place and Terry makes everyone feel so welcome.”
Karen Gowdy, a regular Crochet Club attendee, commented: “The Co-op has been able to do something which hasn’t been done before; they’ve created a space where two communities can come together on mutual ground to develop skills and make friends. Terry has helped to create a real community hub, he even helps out the local Kingfishers group.”
The crochet club is held at Dunmurry Co-op Funeralcare, 139/141 Kingsway, Dunmurry, BT17 9RY, every other Tuesday of the month between 7pm and 9pm.
The club will take place on Tuesday 14th & 28th November. For more information please contact Terry Weir via email:
