Mexborough shows gratitude to local veterans
Sam Ward turns veterans into VIPs for the day
This Remembrance Day many of us gathered at local cenotaphs to remember all those who fought in our armed forces to protect our freedom, particularly those who lost their lives.
Our colleagues have been paying their respects over the last few weeks in many different ways, but we were touched to hear the story of Mexborough Funeralcare.
Funeral Arranger, Sam Ward, wanted to do something special this year and got in contact with her local Royal British Legion with an idea. Thinking that there may be some elderly veterans who may struggle to attend the service, she asked them if they knew of anyone who would benefit from being chauffeured to the remembrance service.
Staff at the RBL were delighted with the offer and put Sam in touch with two veteran couples who were not very mobile and who would greatly benefit from the service. Sam and Funeral Director, Graeme Bolland, picked both couples up on the morning of the service in a limousine and took them to the village war memorial where Sam laid a wreath on their behalf.
After the service, Sam and Graeme were pleased to take the couples to the RBL club to meet friends and other veterans for refreshments, then home when they were ready. Both couples enjoyed the day immensely with one of the gentlemen telling anyone who would listen how they were getting around that day! Talking about the day, Sam commented “My heart was full of joy to know that it meant so much to them.”
