Hockley community support for Braintrust
Mini soccer tournament raised big funds
The Hockley community in Essex, with the support of our Funeralcare team, has given a huge boost to Braintrust, the brain cancer charity, by holding a mini soccer tournament for local primary school children. A fantastic £5,300 has already being raised, with more money still coming in, and a local bank looking to match the final total.
With two of the four local primary schools who took part already benefiting as Co-op causes, they were more than happy to get involved.
The games kicked off at 10.30 with over 150 children playing 10 minute games in teams of 5 or 7 a side.
There was also live music playing all day, food and drinks being served, entertainment with face painting, jewellery making, bouncy castles, pony rides and stalls and at the end of the day a raffle and silent auction.
All the money raised is going toward Braintrust, the brain cancer charity, with the cause being chosen as the main organiser, Sharon, suffers from a, thankfully non-life threatening, brain tumour. However, on finding out that she had a tumour, Sharon met new people in the village that also have one. With 7 people alone in Hockley affected by brain tumours it was a cause close to the community’s heart.
The local Co-op food store also supported the event by donating items for hampers to go into the raffle and with members of the team coming along to volunteer on the day.
The day was a massive success and a fantastic example of a community coming together to make a difference.
