Fun day in support of cancer feel-good charity
the team at Doxford Park raised £500
If we asked the question: "have you, or has somebody that you're close to, ever been affected by cancer?", the sad reality is that a huge majority would answer "yes".
Cancer can turn lives upside down, and those who've been affected know that it's the little pick-me-ups, that give them the boost to start to make things feel more normal again.
Somebody who knows this all too well is Admin Arranger Jan Chapman, from our Doxford Park funeral home in Sunderland.
Jan's been through the struggle of cancer herself, and after receiving fantastic care and support from charity 'Look Good Feel Better', she wanted to do something to give back to them and other cancer patients.
Look Good Feel Better is the only international cancer support charity to provide women with free skincare and make-up workshops, led by trained beauty professionals. Tips and tricks include learning to deal with eyebrow and eyelash loss and changes to the skin. And the cherry on top is that all the women leave with a gift bag full of skincare and beauty products free.
Jan and her Sunderland team came up with the idea to host a local fun day to raise money for the charity, which included craft stalls, burger vans, sweet stalls and tombolas, to traditional summer races including the egg-and-spoon, three-legged and sack race.
The day went down a treat and they managed to raise a massive £500.
Jan praised the charity by saying : "I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September last year. It was a huge shock and the treatment was exhausting, but I soon found Look Good Feel Better.
The charity provides practical advice for women and teenage girls who struggle with the visible side effects of cancer treatment, aiming to help build their self-esteem. I was determined to give something back to them, and the idea of a family fun-day seemed perfect."
What a brilliant charity, and good for you Jan!
