Fairtrade Fortnight

Our fairly traded coffins

Whilst Co-op is synonymous with selling Fairtrade foods in its shops, did you know that back in 2013, we unveiled the first-ever Fair Trade coffins.

Without internationally recognised Fairtrade standards for the materials used to produce the coffins, we collaborated with Traidcraft, members of the World Fair Trade Organisation and the UK’s leading fair trade organisation, who independently assessed the supply chain and helped bring the range to market.

The handcrafted bamboo and willow coffins are produced in Bangladesh at a production facility located in the district of Nilphamari, near to where the raw material bamboo is grown.

Local people, both those working in the manufacturing facility and growing the bamboo, directly benefit from the fairly traded coffin endorsement, which ensures decent working conditions, payment of a fair price and fair terms of payment to suppliers.

Traidcraft conducted a rigorous assessment of the production operation, visiting the factory and growers in Bangladesh to check the coffins were made in accordance with its ten fair trade principles which look at economic opportunities, transparency, fair payment and prices, and ensuring good working conditions.

The bamboo and willow coffins are available across all our funeral homes and are supplied to us by JC Atkinson and manufactured by Oasis Coffins.
