PRESS RELEASE: Co-op’s bereavement group celebrates first birthday

Supporting members of the Dorset community

A bereavement group set up in Dorset celebrated its first birthday on November 5.

Co-op’s Hinton Park Bereavement Group was introduced by manager, Andrea Godber, who works at the woodland burial ground on Wyndham Road. The group, set up last year, provides Co-op Funeralcare with a way of supporting members of its local community through the bereavement process.

Research from the Co-op has found that loneliness is one of the biggest issues facing communities across the UK. As 54%* of recently bereaved people who regularly  feel lonely claim they wouldn’t know where to turn for help, this is another reason the Hinton Park Bereavement Group was started up.

With the support of the British Red Cross, Co-op continues to work closely with local communities to help tackle loneliness, and the development of bereavement groups is another means of confronting the issue.

In the approach to Christmas, the group will continue to hold its regular meetings on the first Saturday of each month. To celebrate the year anniversary, there will also be an additional ‘Christmas lunch’ catch up on 18 November for any who are able to attend.

Andrea Godber, manager at Co-op’s Hinton Park Woodland Burial Ground, said: “We initially decided to set up the group as we wanted to continue to help local families through the grieving process. It offers individuals the opportunity to openly discuss how they’re feeling with like-minded people.

“People can expect bereavement groups to be sombre but the reality is that the conversations are so varied and very often the room is filled with laughter. Members of the public who have suffered a loss, whether a friend, family member or even a pet, are welcome to join us. The group attracts all ages – from those in their twenties to those aged 80 and above!”

Glenn Few, Principal Funeral Director, commented: “We’ve been hosting Co-op’s Hinton Park Bereavement Group since November last year and it’s been great to see it grow each month.

“The group meets to talk about everything, from bereavement to what they’re planning to do over the weekend. It’s a great atmosphere and there’s no better way to have a good conversation than over a good cup of tea.”

Hinton Park Bereavement Group is held at the Hinton Park Woodland Burial Ground, Wyndham Road, Walkford, Christchurch, Dorset, BH23 7EJ, every first Saturday of the month between 10.30am and 12.30pm. The group is run by manager Andrea Godber, Principal Funeral Director Glenn Few, Funeral Director Hana Kempster, Funeral Director Paul Wentworth and Administrator Jane Stevenson.
